Don't start with DkS2.
Either play Dark Souls or Demon's Souls first.

DkS2 gets the mechanics right, but lacks the subtle details that make Souls great. (Also the older ones will be cheaper.)

Spoken like someone who doesn't know how to play.

But he is kind of right for Dark Souls (but not Demon's Souls or Dark Souls 2) multiplayer. Otherwise, for the single player (the entire point of the game), no, there are many tactics to choose from, and backstabbing isn't even always an option.

then the halberd players don't know how to set up / feint attacks well enough

you can honestly use anything to kill someone (almost)

Ive killed people with medium shield bashing before but the better your opponent the more difficult it is/the better you have to be.

Both games are great in their own way and as long as you play the game and find a "class" that fits you best anyone can be great at it. The most challenging part of it all is not panicking and thinking your way through ALL of your fights. And if anything is too hard for you, all you need is a little bit of....

Honestly bro/bra

If you want to play a game where you're basically equal with all your enemies as long as you keep pace with the game; buy it

if you're used to trucking through levels by sheer power/conveniences then i wouldn't

For example. I've died to early game enemies lots of times as an endgame character by just going back to early levels and being careless and nonchalant

thats the type of game it is. You have to be wary of your enemies since they're a threat as opposed to an inconvenience. Same with the levels. You have to notice the informational subtext and the environments' warning signs or else it'll bite you in the ass later on

Bloodstain next to a chest? Trap.
Bloodstain on elevator floor? Trap.
Burnt road leading down long pathway? Clue.
Ice/Crystals falling and hitting something that seems invisible? Clue.
Enemies out in the open next to a suspicious ledge/entrance? Probably an ambush.
Item placed in the middle of an open area as opposed to corners and wells? Ambush
Been a while since fighting enemies in an empty hallway with windows/doors? Ambush
etc etc

But when you finally get it down and beat it then woah.
Its very very very rewarding.

Also if you do get it. When starting after the "tutorial" ...avoid graveyards and sunken cities. Trust me. Wrong way.

Tough as nails and you'll get stumped a lot...Also it doesn't explain a whole lot and makes you figure almost everything out for yourself.
It's also damn unforgiving but fair, almost every time you die it will have been your own fault.

Fun as hell if you have the patience to learn it.

its not too hard if you are careful enough. heck i have heared about players who on their first playthrough didnt die till the smoughstein fight. but that being said. ds1 was a master piece of a game and ds2 is a big let down with a lot of stupid design choises but still stands as a decent game on its own right.

I really don't understand what the problem is with DS2. Personally I found it much better overall, with the only thing it loses to DS1 being re-playability due to the fact that it feels significantly longer.

well. to keep it short:

the boss battles were boring(large humanoid, usually with mobs or several bosses to achieve false difficulty), music was most of the time bland and boring(seriously i think i can remember like 1 or 2 songs from the entire game that were somewhat memorable) it used cheap tactics like huge amount of strong mobs packed together, homing attacks(can best be seen with the heides knights) and traps that could not be predicted(for instance some of the ogres in the aldias keep) also the dumbing down of the torch system to pander to the needs of some casual fans(lack of better term) was annoying, the npcs were just glorified crutches for people who cant summon real players into the game(only one who actually had story was patches. and the only interesting one was that knight who was hollowing, and that only because it was just a glorious exposition of how hollowing works in lore wise) best example of this is the blacksmith and his daughter who never interract despite being father and daughter. it also got wrong most of the things that made dark souls and demon souls good games.(for instance the hard difficulty was not the main focus of the game, and the previous games while hard, were mostly fair)

I don't remember the music being any better in DS1. The mobs were only an issue with the Royal Rat Vanguard and Rat Authority boss fights, if they're homing I didn't notice because I can still dodge them all well enough, the Seathe insta-kill fight was only predictable if you read about it on a walkthrough, I don't see how the torch system of DS1 was advanced in any way like seriously. how is lighting a torch dumbed down in comparison to holding up a lantern? They are effectively the exact same , I don't see any problem with increased NPC summons for bosses, and just to finsih, the Anor Londo snipers and Ornstein boss fights were just as annoying as any part of DS2.

the music varied. plus the overall style was more recognizable. most of the boss fights in ds2 use the same song that is something of a mash up of artorias and smoughstein fight soundtrack.

also do tell me on how fair and fun the royal sentinels boss fight was. or how looking glass knight could not home at you like a chosen undead seeking missile with his jump.

and the torch system was more of a killing off a great gimmick for the game because some beta testers whined about not having shields(the game was A LOT darker before release, forcing people to use torch a lot more)

and its not the fact that you can get npc.its because the npc had no other role in the game than being there to help you kill a boss if you cant get proper help. also most bosses in ds1 could kill you.but its usually smart to avoid their attacks instead of seeing how much dmg they do.

and anor londo and ornstein boss fights may have been hard. but they were fair.

you had two bosses. one of them had lower health. you could summon an extremely overpowered npc to help if you had trouble with it, and the pillars added a nice cover to go for.

meanwhile fights like royal sentinel rushes you with 3 bosses if you arent fast enough.and it also drops you into the fight with no time to prepare for what is coming. the smelter demon was notably broken with his hitboxes, move set and defense. rat king was a boring reskin of sif with added mobs wich was more of an annoyiance than fun fight.

and thats not even talking about the revisited bell tower gargoyles wich basicly zerg rushes you with 5 of the gargoyles. and that ends up with badly placed rush of 1 invader and 10 ******* dogs.

also mob balancing was also ****, they had unlimited stamina and nearly never got stunned, they also made ******** of damage and their attacks homed at you like a undead seeking missile. not to mention there was ******** of them in every corner.

The last time I fought Looking Glass Knight I didn't get hit once. I still don't see what's such a big deal about the 'homing'. Royal Sentinels only rushes you with all 3 if you're a dingus and you jump down from the ledge straight away, and there is no boss fight in any Dark Souls where you know what's coming without needing to look at a walkthrough. As for preparation, in both DS1 and DS2 I stuck to the theory of "bosses are always behind a fog gate, therefore always be prepared to have to fight a big enemy when walking through a fog gate." Kind of common sense. And again for the Smelter Demon, even with the burning in close proximity I took no more than 50% health damage tops, both him and Looking Glass Knight I found to be a piece of cake.

and i dont die to the early mobs anymore at all but it still wont change the fact that their hitboxes are broken and their attacks home at you. and the homing is bad because its cheap, unfair and most of all stupid design choise that is used to compensate for crappy ai design. and yes. most of the people going through the royal sentinels usually dont panic and dodge to the main arena....and even if you kill the first one solo you still face two of them with unlimited stamina and ludicrous poise

and ds 1 had one cheap boss design and that was the taurus demon wich gave you no time to look around, and bombarded you with mobs.

smelter demon, not only has high defence( avg dmg of 100 or 60 to him with piercing wepaons at +6) and broken hitboxes.

Dark Souls II has way better PVE than Dark Souls
(You can stomp through both if you know how to)

Though DSII is way more casual designed with a bonfire every 5 ******* feet. It really really really takes away from the danger and atmosphere so just because of that (Im sure there are other for and against reasons people have)
... id say Dark Souls itself was much harder.

Dark Souls slightly beats out the boss battles of Dark Souls II (we don't talk about Nash)
....Mainly due to DLC and Smough and Ornstein being the tits
.... also since in Dark Souls strafing right wasn't the universal answer to boss fights.

Dark Souls PVP is way better than Dark Souls 2 PVP

BUT ONLY because of Soul Memory. Dark Souls 2 PvP has tons more options and gets so so so much right

but Soul Memory (in my opinion) just completely ***** on the other options to the point that its a big enough negative to vastly counter all the positives of Dark Souls II PVP
