I'm curious now. Can we call that a mental illness? (No offence) I mean, it's not accepting what you are to a WHOLE new level. I do understand the feeling of not liking what you are but I can deal with it, so what's wrong with them? (Again, no offence...)

Other kin sounds completely ridiculous and mentally ill but they're in the same boat as transgendered people so they have a bit of a safety net there. It's like a hostage situation, if they go down, they're taking trannies with them.
User avatar #75 to #2 - fyaq (06/15/2014) [-]
Yes. It can be classified as a type of identity disorder.

I'll keep this as anonymous, but I'm a furry, just not to.. that extent. I get people don't like themselves, and may have a delusion that changing who you are might make things better, or make you more happy, but they are disassociating themselves with reality completely. Therefore, I believe that this should be classified as a mental illness.
And as for those who get angry at this statement, everyone is different, but this is going a bit far.

There's been feral children that act like the animals they've been raised by but that is just human nature to adapt to survive. In this case it's like they want to be a feral child.

transgenders exist and we're not allowed to call them mentally ill, so why should we do the same with otherkin? Both think they're something they are not, and both insist on other people acting as though they are the thing they clearly are not.

Transgender mental problem tend to be relieved by the opposite sex hormone injections. SO something medical is going on.

This... Idk what this is...

As a 3rd year psychology major, I know pretty much everything about psychology ever. So my two cents is I'd label this as a somatoform disorder, a disorder which holds symptoms similar to a medical disorder, but nothing physical is wrong. Often times they can be caused by anxiety or depression. Although I DO understand and have studied homosexuality and transgender people, this is something I have never seen taken seriously by the field. Its likely a symptom of a deeper need to reject their own humanity.

I'd count it as mental illness. Someone thinks they have a tail which they do not, and act like they have the tail there, going as far as asking others not to sit on this tail that doesn't exist. That's padded room crazy right there.
User avatar #12 to #3 - forsakensaint (06/14/2014) [-]
I dont think the person in question really thinks she/he has a tail, just insist that everyone would treat him/her the way that she/he had a tail and believe in dat ******** ... sad attempt to make the ''lie'' a truth.

Sadly it is really common that persons without any actual mental illness wastes the time of therapists and so on with a crap like this, when actually its mostly just sad attempt to be ''unique'' or something special... Well, they are ''special'' yeah, in the retard way.
User avatar #62 to #12 - nustix (06/14/2014) [-]
I don't think they are wasting a therapists time. Some people go there for feeling a bit down. These people could use that help to fit back into society.

If we assume the tail isn't hypothetical, it could go as far as being a phantom limb. However, yes, this would have to be defined as a mild mental affliction, an identity oddity, something like a transgender with dysphoria, but more like a "transspecies person". Either way it's just a slight tweak to self identity, most likely not caused by any chemical imbalance, unless it was originally caused by hormones.

As far as I can tell, this sort of stuff is just like a teenager telling their parents they don't get them about any other sort of thing they like, for example wanting to be a rapper, or dressing "like a whore" like the other kids.

TL;DR: If our brains are like computers, he's just got some strange settings in a couple of drivers, though it's the same drivers as everyone else has.

I feel like they just want to be something that they can never be. They find more joy in being a blissful arrogant animal (Common misconception, animals are typically fearing for their lives). Why not try to be a cute one?
#59 - withstrangeraeons (06/14/2014) [-]
Furries I can understand. Some people have kinks for leather, or being electrocuted, or pretending to be sexy nurses, so they might as well have them for animal people.
Trans people I can understand, because, hey, human bodies are weird messy things. I could see God putting the settings on random and accidentally creating something that's basically a male but looks like a female, and vice versa.

But no, people. You are not a trigendered pyrofox.

I can't imagine having to deal with that kind of person professionally.

Anyone that doesn't feel mutually with them yet still puts up with them has some sort of will power I'll never achieve

May god have mercy on your soul, future therapist.

I used to play dnd with an otherkin, he always plays as a werewolf and we always have to make new characters level two so he can have the "attained" template. He even fills out his description every time that he went out and found a lycanthrope so he could be "one with his spirit" or some ******** like that
