If it is hard to see already, and then it is suddenly HARDER TO SEE THAN BEFORE I think we can safely say that when it is MORE THAN DIFFICULT TO SEE you may have some trouble.

To be fair, most escalators move at walking speed, so the people in line aren't waiting more than an extra second or two to not walk up the stairs. They're still lazy, don't get me wrong. It's just not as drastic as still images make it look.
