I had to do the same thing last semester as the test was going to be to identify minerals just by looking at them.

You can't identify minerals just by looking at them.
User avatar #57 to #55 - ronyx (12/16/2012) [-]
not sure if serious

Serious. If you just look at them, you are judging minerals just by luster, colour and cleavage.
For example, you wouldn't be able to identify pyrite and gold apart by just looking at them. You need to do more.

Are you fucking serious right now?
If you can't identify the difference between pyrite and gold than you might want to check your eyes. There are definite differences.

Like what? How are they different in luster, color, and cleavage?
User avatar #102 to #98 - bronybox (12/16/2012) [-]
Pyrite:
A darker shade of a kind of brassy yellow.
Very distinct cleavage.
Crystal Habits include the cube, octahedron and pyritohedron (a dodecahedron with pentagonal faces) and crystals with combinations of these forms

Gold:
Gold is a brighter, buttery yellow.
No identifiable cleavage.
Crystal Habits include massive nuggets and disseminated grains.

minerals have cleavage?...

Yes. Not the cleavage your thinking about tho.

fuck sake, i was expecting a chemistry or geology joke/pun.

How many notifications a day do you get from people saying cleavage?

sometimes none,sometimes 20-50.
I'm not complaining since i get linked to decent nsfw.

There are certain basic minerals that can indeed be identified just by looking at them due to the color and texture.
#64 to #59 - catzombie (12/16/2012) [-]
Yea basic... due to color and texture... yea... some minerals..

Like 10% of them. But if you wanna get above the basics, you gotta do more then just look at them.
User avatar #70 to #64 - ronyx (12/16/2012) [-]
Well that particular test was just when we began getting to know the minerals. The final test indeed included doing all tests that we chose to do to determine the minerals.
#71 to #70 - catzombie (12/16/2012) [-]
Kewl. For my test I had to memorize all the qualities of every mineral...
