Hughes wasn't much of a major character, no, but any appearences he did have, he just had a way of capturing your heart, in my opinion.

Not an alchemist, just your normal behind-a-desk soldier and family man, who died to protect his friends and family.

Not to mention, the reason he was killed, is because he discovered the hummonculi, which edward and everybody else took nearly 30 episodes later to figure out.

Agreed, Hohenheim is an extremely deep character, for what little time he had on-screen/page.
