I've just sort've realized something. I watched Avatar: The Last Air Bender seasons 1-2 recently and I've never actually seen it rain where Katara took advantage of it. I think the only time I saw it rain was the episode where Sokka is out at sea with the Fisherman and the storm arrives. ... Huh. Something tells me it raining at any point would have lead to some serious decimation of anyone who tried to fuck with water-tride.

You'd think the southern water tribe would've owned the Fire Nation invaders with all that snow, ice and freakin' water laying about. I mean the way they put it the fire benders came along and just rounded the water benders all up.

The Fire Nation was highly industrialized and had a German-style war machine going for them, plus surprise on their side for the initial advance. Their ships were way too big to throw around and too tough to stab.
