NOW GUYS YOU'RE ALL FORGETTING SOMETHING IMPORTANT
Toph was not born of bending parents, yet she became a bender due to badgermoles, the original source of earth bending. She became the strongest earth bender to exist.
Aang needed to learn fire bending, but Zuko couldn't call up a flame. They went and visited the dragons, the original source of fire bending. They learnt a stronger and more powerful form of fire bending that did not rely on rage to be used.
Aang learnt energy bending from the original source. Boom, he can energy bend.
Yes, ok, Aang is the avatar, he has the ability to learn all of these things, but focus on Toph who didn't know how to earth bend, but was taught how. Think about all of the original benders for each of these fields. They were taught by the original source of that type of bending. So, if someone happened to find the original source of air bending, then it is quite likely that they can learn to air bend, and therefore not create more air benders who are descendants of Aang.
tl;dr - Go find the original bending source and this statement becomes invalid, because, as taken from the little info on the subject, anybody can learn that type of bending.

Just a small point Im probally wrong but it never really said toph was a non bender or that her parents were non benders I mean why have an earth bending teacher for a child you isnt a bender they merely underestimated her powers due to her being blind they only saw her as weak child who needed constant protection

mdmazing is right the bison are the original air benders, the dragons are the original firebenders, moon and tide original water benders, badger moles original earth benders If you look at the avatar lore before the 4 elemental bendings existed other things were bent usually energy or spirt bending like what korra's uncle did and what amon/aang did those techniques are for the most part now lost to the world since elemental bending became a thing.

Can you like not mention me every three seconds?
User avatar #200 to #194 - TheFixer (09/30/2013) [-]
first off loved that movie second off your fault for having a name like that when avatar is popular
#203 to #200 - Elemental (10/01/2013) [-]
I have had this account since '09, so no, avatar was not very popular on here back then. Even if the last airbender ended in '08

i fail to see how it wasnt popular but arguing over that will defeat the purpose of this... the last airbender ran from '05 to '08 you made yours a year after it ended. and now its popular (again) and admin made the notification system to alert you to when your name is used/rolled.

Ya, I'm aware of it. So either way it isn't my fault, because that system was implemented long after I made the account.

Perhaps the source of air bending is a big flying bison. As they 'bend' air so they can fly. ( I think)

Yeah I'm pretty sure they said in the show that the Sky Bison are the original Air Benders.

Well, what I think is Tophs parents, Had the earth bending genes in them from somewhere in their long family line.

They're just too much of an upstanding family that they had a lot of other priorities instead of learning earth bending.

If it was true that non-benders could easily learn bending from the original source of bending then I think the show would pivot a lot more around that subject instead of them contradicting it constantly.

The question is though, how did the first benders learn to bend then? Besides, if we're going by that logic, then everyone will have a little bender gene in them, and therefore would still have the chance to learn.

Perhaps, Tophs parents had the gene in them but were born non-benders.

That is possible to happen, Seeing as how Aang and Katara had Bumi who's a non-bender.

I think back then they just weren't shown how to bend until the animals shown them. The gene was still around with respective groups, just not, used yet.

True, but this all still makes the content plausible, as there may be many people with the airbender gene who just don't know it.

But that particular gene was restricted to the Air Nomads. They all died out so there was no way for it to resurface except through Aangs lineage.
#197 to #183 - rikka (09/30/2013) [-]
Y'see the chances of that are gonna be very, REALLY low.

Since, The Air Nomads were very secluded people at that time, Living up in the mountains trying to find inner peace, Y'know **** which monks do.

I doubt the gene got out before the fire nation attacked.

I think the thing is that they can't learn it easily but they can learn it if the situation is dire enough, it's a raised by wolves trope sort of thing tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RaisedByWolves
Toph was lost in the mountains alone, scared and blind in the darkness she ran into the gentle natured Badger moles who taught her how to see things their way, I imagine if for some bizarre reason someone was faced with a life or death situation and a sky bison was there to teach them they could probably learn airbending but it would be a matter of circumstance and not a matter of 'easily going out and learning'
