well there hasn't been a need for it in 70 years... so the benders are not as in practice or as needed as they were before... the new strife is making them better... Korra has been training for her whole life, that is why she is so good compared to most of the others...

Another thing I've notices is the spread of special bending I.E., blood, metal, and lightning, I'm kinda hoping we'll see some new type of bending this go around. Like some sound bending or something.
