i was kind of confused at this, i thought he couldnt go into the avatar state since he didnt release all the chakras. I could have swore that the monk said he could never go into the avatar state again. Although im not 100% sure.

The guru said that aang couldn't open the final chakra if he didn't let go of katara. Before he decided, aang had a vision that his friends were trouble against azula and left to help them. During the fight, aang realised he needed the avatar state to win so made a rock defence and meditated to open the final chakra. Azula shot him in the back with lightning after he entered the avatar state, which screwed up the ability to enter it. After that, the lion turtle that taught him spirit bending healed him.

I thought so too, not sure if Guru Pathik was just trying to make sure Aang learned how to go into the avatar state before leaving, or what. I think only while he is in the avatar state he has to let go of earthly connections, why when he first goes into the avatar state (both times) Katara is the only one who seems to be able to knock him out of it, and he wouldn't want that during a fight. Aang was just scared of letting Katara go, but he finds out he doesn't have to, only during the avatar state.

yeah, he did. right before the scene that edgewooddirk showed in the GIF he posted above, Aang had created an orb of stone around him to defend from Ozai's attacks. Ozai basically created what looked like a very small comet in his hand, and blasted the rock orb with it.

The force of the blast tore apart Aang's protective sphere, and as he bent the air around him to further protect himself, he was pushed backwards into the rocks behind him. One of the rocks was jutting out, and when Aang hit it, it pierced the lightning wound on his back where Azula shot him, somehow fixing what Azula had screwed up, allowing Aang to access the Avatar State at will.
