I figured he was in dark avatar state when he died so the cycle was broken before it even got a chance to begin.

This kinda makes sense. The defeat of Unalaq was actually pretty vague. Since Unalaq was in a sort of more-spirit-than-anything kind of position, and Korra did the waterbending thing with the lights and ****. I don't think he died, rather he "ascended" or something. I still hate the UnalaqxVaatu thing, though.

Answering to your questions i think:
-i suppose Vaatu will just reapear like Rava predicted, with no real meaning to the plot.
-If it were to start a cycle, i think it would appear to either people that would naturally have a connection with the spirits or a cycle between nations like the normal avatar, and considering that the real power behind wan's bending was Rava i think he could learn to bend, or just have the power to control spirits. It could be really useful now that the portals are open.
-I hope so...

What's going to happen once the avatar cycle does a full circle and arrives at air again? There would only be a handful of airbenders in the world (Tenzin's great grandkids), and it could be years before any one of them gives birth, and we know that as soon as the previous avatar (a fire nation guy) dies, the next airbender to be born will be the avatar.

It would be cool if Korra had vaatu grow inside her and had to deal with having the dark avatar energy a and the light avatar energies constantly battling inside her. That would make a really good plot for season 3.

Like it have been said, Korra is now a dual avatar. Vaatu respawn inside Raava. And Raava fused with Korra. So Korra have Raava+Vaatu inside.

BTW Raava+Vaatu sounds like Avatar

I wish we can get a new series with the dark avatar as the main character, it would be so much cooler than a normal avatar doing what he is expected to do

Considering that the next harmonic convergence is in 10k years probably they will have some kind of technology to counter spirits (without depending on bending) or invent time travel and such. I think that if the avatar goes rogue in 10k years they could probably shoot it with a death laser or restrain him/her at least.

A dark avatar would be interesting for the plot though.

He was sorta in the dark form of the avatar state when he died though. If the same that's true of the avatar is true of what he became, any cycle there could have been ended.

i didn't even think about that. I don't think that there will be another Dark avatar, at least i hope not. but you may have a good point about it becoming an internal struggle of the avatar. either way though that should take thousands of years to become an issue and by that point, by having lived with the spirits so long the avatar may be able to receive help and effectively spit out Vaatu into a ready made prison ready to wait until the next harmonic convergence.
also i think a normal Avatar could be pretty dark if they wanted to be. there have been plenty that are more than willing to kill without a second though "for the greater good" but i do not think that a dark avatar would be able to be truly good. Raava takes a back seat and just helps, Vaatu would constantly whisper and tempt and try to take over as we saw.

one thing I wonder is if theres a dark avatar cycle, after 4 dark avatars (assuming it goes in order) Vaatu will have learned all 4 bending arts and help the dark avatar to become fully realized.

he seemed to know them a little anyway. earth water and air were used at least. which given the absolute lack of training was impressive. if dark avatars were a thing and did all the training the normal ones do then they would be unstoppable i think. however it seems Vaatu is destroyed (well he can't be completely destroyed but too weak to go onto make more dark avatars)

He used other bending arts? I saw him bend steam, I saw him bend ice, he bended water of course, but nothing like fire.

he opened up the ground, trapped Korra in it and started closing it again on her. i don't remember seeing fire, and i couldn't tell if he was using air or if it was just breezes from all the awesome stuff going on. but he DEFINITELY used earth.

hmm......i don't know now....i thought it was rock as under the snow it looks rocky but it could have been the light. you're probably right though as he can't bend other elements and Vaatu never had them to store like Raava did.

If when Raava was destroyed she forgot the past avatar lives, why wouldent she lose the bending arts. because Raava was recreated from Vaatu, she shouldent have anything left of her previous life should she?

that's a good point. maybe it was just the connection with korra that was lost/destroyed. Raava can't be destroyed so i suppose aspects of her (which now includes the bending) can't be destroyed either. i think it was just "the human taint" that was destroyed and the bending never came from a human in the first place.
do you think Raava chooses benders to make avatars, or do you think as she has all four elements, she has to pick a non bender so that they don't "double up" on an element. or maybe they are just really good at their native element (it's just no avatar has really been shown to be any better at their own element than the others, they just might use it more)

Well no because even after Raava and korra were separated Korra still could water bend. and that made me think, Ravva doesnt have firebending, Wan had that before Raava and him met.

i didn't think she could, i didn't notice her doing anything like that because she was weak. i know she went to the tree and meditated but i didn't notice the bending (not saying you're wrong just saying i can't remember)
Also yes Wan had it before they met, however he had acquired it the same was he got all the rest, through the lion turtles, and while he used other elements (before they fused) Raava held it for him, as she did with all of them. so Raava had them all an equal amount really.

Well the spiritual purification technique, uses waterbending, so I assumed when she purified Vaatunalok she waterbended.

i dunno i think by that point i was still getting over the giant blue spirit form she had, but you have a point. i wonder what happens with the spare one then. maybe it does make said element stronger, but it gets added to the pool which is why it seems avatars are getting stronger all the time, because every time a cycle is completed each element has powered up.

it probably just makes it a bit better, but that brings up another point Korra just got insanely weak, because the avatar state channels her past lives and gives all their power through one body, but she doesnt have any past lives to channel anymore.

i think they kind of trashed that though with Wan. he hadn't any past lives but was still just as powerful in avatar state as any avatar they have shown. although i do agree she will be weakened in many ways, i think she will still be stronger than average.

me too, i thought it a shame that they kinda said "nah Raava provides the power not your past lives" but at the same time they kept the ability to talk to them and gain wisdom from them (not that she used it often) and now that is lost. maybe an aspect of the next season will be trying to get that link back. the spirit world is open now , there must be some way. it is a reasonable assumption that all the past avatars are there in some way since Aang appeared to Tenzin to help him out of the fog.

this sounds super corny but I had a dream that season 3 was all of the past lives were reincarnated as themselves but non benders, and Korra Had to Recollect her past lives. its stupid I know but it might be entertaining to watch haha.

it would be quite cool. there would just be that moment right at the end of an episode where they walk in on a figure meditating and are all like "who are you?" and he just turns around smiles and goes, "Hi, I'm Aang." (that would be qeird for Bumi Tenzin and Kaya, also Katara)

the thing I wouldent know is would they know they were once the avatar, or who they are, or would they be oblivious. it would be a neat concept.

it could be cool both ways. like young Aang greeting Tenzin and co like "son, you have made me so proud, i'm in this form as it was how i was when i became a fully realised avatar" or also "you're my kid? cool. can you Air scooter?"
if the first way we could also have young Roku and Kyoshi etc
