It was a bit of a mood killer, but I don't think it can be too sad if kids are supposed to be watching too (didn't stop them with Tales of Ba Sing Se though...)

It would have been better if they handled it like the fan art predicted (it was pretty much spot on)

i think how they showed him in the show was perfect. he's not the sort of guy to get masivly bent out of shape over a girl, the thing that hurt him most was the fact that it was his brother and if you have a problem with a sibling you gotta go all out

To be fair I was laughing like crazy in the scene with him "drunk on noodles" as it were. But still, Avatar are great at giving less serious characters emotional and serious moments (like Sokka with Yue).

The thing is, they can't have it be too heavy-handed. The main issue in this wasn't that Bolin lost Korra, it was that his brother stole her. He's mad at Korra, sure, but he's not about to flip his shit THAT MUCH over a girl he's just met. If they'd had it be too heartbreaking, it wouldn't be realistic. Trust was the issue IMO.
