"lin" or 林 means forest or wood

Problem is that there are many characters that are read BO and LIN.
Bo can mean several things 波 拨 播 薄 博 伯 驳 玻 剥 are all BO
same thing for lin.

It's also depends on the tone when pronouncing it. Most Oriental languages use tone as a method of wording, instead of meaning.
