Something did happen in his child hood. His parents were killed by fire benders and they burned his face (thats why he wears a mask).
As in, it couldn't be Bumi because his parents were not killed by fire benders. Katara is still alive, and it's unlikely Aang was killed by a fire bender, and even if he were, both parents were not killed.

You keep posting this everywhere. Amon has no proof of that story and is clearly a deceiver in the series. There is no reason to believe he is telling the truth. If it is at all true it is probably something like he attempted murder and Zuko burned half his face so Amon made up a story based on a half truth.
How is he a deceiver? He hides his equalist lairs but thats just about all i can think of. He's the bad guy, but we don't know if he's a deceiver. Also, the creators of the series clearly have something planned. In a short series like this, it's not a good idea to assume the writers are just having characters spew bullshit
His entire "bit" is that he is attempting to bring justice and equal rights but what he wants it armament for his people and the extermination of benders. He plays the people like Tarloc played the politicians. The story of being attacked by fire benders is a way to get on the peoples soft side, make him relate able. He does all of this for the public eye, he even says that's why he doesn't take Korra's powers right away. he didn't want her to become a symbol against him, a martyr.
