It's just pushed a little at a time, with church, conversation, and peer pressure from your religious community to participate. Imagine if there was absolutely no imposing religion at all for the first 15 years of someone's life, to the time the mind begins to question.
Atheists, yes, there are many, though it seems to generate less outside Funnyjunk discussions, who ridicule religion without giving too much reasoning. You chose to think independently of religion, but the big numbers develop a high level of ignorance to atheist thought and reasoning, so in order to defend your small population at about 20% of the country today, it's time to open civil discourse rather.
