There is a religion that has been around since the early 1900's, but lately is gaining support.
It is called the "Law of Attraction."
In short, the bad things that happen to you, be it of enormous importance (disease, poverty, etc.) or minor infractions in daily life (catching every red light, etc.) are the result of negative thinking. Basically, you "bad vibed" the bad things into existence.
The cause of these bad things, they say, is that we are constantly thinking about the things we do not want. And the fact that we are only focusing on the negative, some supernatural force known as the "Law of Attraction" abides by our thoughts and makes it so.
However there are three things wrong with this...hypothesis.
1) The fact that the will of the universe is at our whim is extremely superficial. How conceited does a person have to be to actually believe that the entire universe will obey their wants and desires?
So this idea puts humans in a position of superiority over...well everything. What's wrong with that? Well, it would kind of require that humans have existed always. And this just isn't true.
2) The terms "positive" and "negative" are simply ideas. Positive and negative do not exist in the physical world (not the physical sciences sense of the word) They are just descriptive terms invented to help describe a thought.
What does this mean? It means that what you don't want to happen is almost...synonymous with what you do.
If I don't want to stub my toe, I'll avoid walking so close to furniture. In the same respect, I want my toes to remain unscathed today, so I'll avoid walking so close to furniture. These are both thoughts, or ideas, that represent the same idea in either a positive or negative respect that produce the same result, regardless of how I decide to think about it.
3) LoA dictates that what you want becomes what you have. So, if two conflicting "wants" should arise at the same time, it becomes paradoxical.
For instance, I want a clear sky on Independence day in City-Town, State so that I can set off fireworks and enjoy the 4th of July.
However, YOU want no fireworks going off in City-Town,State. You have to get up early, and the fireworks always wake you up, so you want rain, because it soothes you to sleep.
So you have one person "wanting" rain into existence while the other "wants" the opposite. Now what?
I'm sick of all the "fix-your-life-if-you-buy-my-book" schemes that keep coming out.
I'm mad, bro. And you should be too.
