Dear atheists.

I'm Atheist/agnostic, and not really hip to all of the different branches of Christianity. What differentiates Lutheranism from the other belief systems? (I think I know a few Lutherans and I wouldn't want to embarrass myself in a conversation or whatever.)

Yes, I understand that, but what makes Lutheranism different from Baptism, Evangelism, Methodism, etc.?

some one could explain all the differences, but it's really more of a social issue, based on geography, demographics, and the individuals at a given congregation. A Methodist church in rural Mississippi is going to be very different from a Methodist church in Chicago (even if both are affiliated with the United Methodist Church organization). Individuals within that congregation are going to have differing opinions, even if the church takes an official stand. I grew up in a Methodist church. The members were pretty liberal, as far as most churches attenders go. Service was very traditional though (singing hymns led by a choir, piano player, typical pew seating). Now I go to a Baptist church, which holds more conservative views but the worship is very contemporary. There's a big focus on just showing up dressed how ever you like (t-shirt and jeans). The church is in a strip mall, and the service is in a small room (can fit about 100 people, much smaller than a typical church). Songs are led by a band (guitar + drums).

I went off into a tangent there, but the point is that what ever official views the church holds, some one who considers themselves Lutheran could have views that align more with the official Methodist view, or vice versa.

I used to go to a few Churches when I was younger, but I never really questioned what branch we were affiliated with, unless I would ask my parents about us not being baptized, going to confession, taking part in communion, etc. Usually they would just tell me that we were Christian, and not Catholic. Looking back on it, we would go to pretty laid back Churches like the one you described (not really a whole lot of formal wear, band playing songs about the Bible, etc.) So, we were probably Baptist. (Doesn't matter much anymore, but I suppose it's nice to know.)

the evangelists are so sure they're right that they push their religion on others and an athiest is so sure they're right they bag on Christianity saying that it's wrong
