they are looked upon as gods, they are not really gods. if hulk appeared to humanity hundreds of years ago, he wouldve been seen as a god too.

perhaps that is because they wield near limitless power but have no other god-like traits (like Hercules) so the term demi-god is the most appropriate description?

is norse mythology thor is a full on god but in marvel universe he is described as a demi god, this may be due to the fact that calling him a god could might have offended a segment of the films religious audience, but he is indeed a hammer wielding god, thunder and lightning and everything, with the exception of the film calling him a demi god like i said.
