Statisticly speaking, sylvari are at least 20% harder to draw than average bookah. You must take consideration patterns and unique shapes on their faces. Something like "following examples" can ruin entire portrait.
But thats the point! They're apart of a race that competes with each other! They're organic, each one you meet is after the same thing, be the smartest and most successful member of their race. You can tell who's at the top and who's at the bottom, each one is unique and the way they go about climbing the ladder is different, and the best part is that they demonstrate that they have the resources and capacity to remain in the world. Meanwhile, everytime I see a plant-person floran get in here and post something about sylvari , I can tell their entire life story in five seconds. I really can't with an asura! How many rivals have they undercut? How many professors or mentors have they had? How did they get to the point they are in now.
For example, take a random shopkeeper. You know hes trying to become an inventor, you know hes working on some sort of magical and fantastic invention, but why be a shopkeeper? Was his parents one and they're just carrying the torch? Did he run out of funding for his krewe and had to earn funds the old-fashion way? Did his invention fail and he is taking up owning a shop because all his hopes and dreams are dead? You never know!
Sylvari, on the otherhand, I tend to just say "Oh wow... Another plant crawled out of a tree and became a guard/tailoring instructor/bag merchant." I mean sure they have their dreams of glory and grandeur from the pale tree, but they never act like it! Asura do, you feel the personality in each one.
I see your point, but you also have to take into account that the Sylvari are a new race on Tyria not but a hundred years old. They are honest, direct, and focused taking most things at face value. They struggle to balance curiosity with duty, eagerness with chivalry, and warfare with honor. Magic and mystery entwine to shape the future of this race that has so recently appeared. And then The Dream! Inside the Dream they learn that which other Sylvari has learned. The Dream is described as being like a well, into which memories and thoughts of Sylvari are poured.
Because the memories and information received differs among the Sylvari, they are not without individualism. Upon leaving the golden fruit from which they are born, they are left to interpret what they saw in the Dream. Yes most Sylvari become guards only to protect the Pale Tree, maybe that is how they interpreted their dream. Or like some Sylvari who cut themselves off from the Pale Tree, and became soundless, they became merchants without her guidance.
I look at the Asura, and I know that they want to be the smartest, I know they want their newest invention to the next big thing for their race. They are more content to stay on their little cube world, and ignore the problems of the other races and the dragons. not all but a good portion While the Sylvari have been more than helpful to getting rid of the dragons, in case you forgot about Trahearne.
I.. well, not sure. I guess finding a reason to draw is a start or maybe trying new things. Depends on current state of mind. I was about to start drawing sooner, but attemps were just making me to dislike my art. This is not a case now. I just did something I have done before, but better and in a different way. Just try to draw something you like or something you wanted to draw. No need to complete your drawing, a sketch is enough for a start.
