I don't understand why everyone who loves anime is so obsessed with Japanese culture. I mean, sure, anime is fine. Kinda creeps me out, but fine none the less. The most "Japanese" anime I've seen is Gurren Lagann, and that was great. Why does everyone try to get so into the Japanese/anime culture? I mean, just out of curiosity, why isn't it enough to just enjoy a good show?

I'd have to guess it's because some people find their culture too "basic" so they immerse themselves in other cultures and end up taking it too far to the point where they behave like that culture IS their culture (Like the "bad anime fan" type)

Personally I love watching anime & reading manga, but other than that, martial arts, and the food, I really don't care for Japanese culture. I collect katanas & swords from various animes I've watched and games I've played though, but it's more of a hobby than a culture thing O.o

Sometimes it doesn't have to do with anime itself, some people just find another culture kind of cool, and anime may just spark that curiosity of the Japanese culture. Personally, as just me, I like other cultures. I like my own, of course, but I think seeing how others go about stuff is neat.

I don't really care much for the culture, but the more you understand it, the more the shows will make sense.

Personally, I've spent more time watching Geisha dances then anime, the old culture is amazing.
