Oh.
Modern shounen.
Is it any good?
I mean, is it different from any other shounen anime/manga?

Also, whilst the artwork isn't all that great in the manga most of the time... holy ******* **** does it ramp the quality up sometimes. There are more memorable images from Magi's 170 chapter run than the entirety of One Piece and the same with Naruto, Fairy Tail, Dragonball Z and Bleach.

The manga creates such investment between characters and audience that the moments of sheer, unforgettable awesomeness stand out all the more.

Ooh, can't believe I forgot Magi.

Magi is a new shounen series and whilst the manga is in the 170s the anime is still only in it's 20s. It is actually better than One Piece and I'd suggest you searching it out. It has it's own unique style in both writing and art (though the artwork in the Manga isn't all that magnificent) and unlike most shounen series this series doesn't shy away from dealing with a lot of very poignant topics in depth such as slavery, freedom, responsibility and destiny.

What is currently happening in the Manga is the BEST that I have ever seen a Shounen Manga be with a constant weekly back and forth between two formidable forces with neither side gaining the advantage for too long but not to the extent that it detracts from the ongoing narrative or tension.

It really hits, for me at least, the perfect 10/10 of what a shounen manga should be and is the only series I can think of that does that.

It's a really mixed bag. The main character is one of the most generic I've ever seen and for everything interesting about the main characters there are equal numbers of things that really make them irritating.

It also has no tension in it... at all. Mainly because nobody ever seems to die or to suffer anything more than emotional stress and even then you don't really see any change in the characters as time goes by. This lack of tension isn't helped by the out of place and very in-your-face humour that the series injects.

It's also one of the most fanservicey manga I've ever read to the point where I think the mangaka would be more at-home writing porn sometimes.

However it has a fantastically unique score, imaginative designs, a lot of interesting secondary and tirtiary characters, a very interesting lore and world, interesting and refreshing takes on inter-character relationships without them being romantic (most of the time). The Animé also has the absolute best example of a filler Arc that I've ever seen.

I personally still both read and watch Fairy Tail in spite of the difficulties that it sometimes presents because I just found those things in there that I really liked. It's not the best Shounen out at the moment imo though, because that is One Piece, followed by Naruto and then Toriko, but it's good enough that even at it's worst points (and trust me, there are a lot of those) I've never once felt compelled to drop the series as I have felt with Bleach.

I know I am. But then again, I don't tear enormous monsters apart with my bear hands just so that I can see what they taste like... so you've kinda got me cornered there.
