DVD is better because it's cheaper and pretty hard to tell the difference between the two

Lol, there is a big difference. Find a 1920*1080p (or higher) resolution TV and buy a new movie in both DVD and Blu-ray and play them both on your ps3/blu-ray-player or what ever and you should be able to spot the difference! If not, either your TV/Moniter sucks or you eyes suck.
I wasn't saying there's no difference, especially if you have them side by side
But, if you came round to my house and watched a film, and i asked you is this a dvd or blu ray. You would have to pause and consider it, and you would probably be able to answer after considering it. Although many people wouldn't be able to at all, without a side to side picture
Plus, when i was putting the film i doubt you would be watching to see if i put in a dvd or a blue ray, because ultimately the difference it makes to how enjoyable the film is, is less important than how comfortable your cushion is
TL: DR - It's mainly a marketing thing, won't compete unless the price competes with DVD's
