Loved that scene, but how does captain obvious from tumblr make this any funnier?

Because not everyone realizes how mistranslations from English into Japanese work? I had no idea what they meant until I read the comment, after which yes, it seemed obvious.

Don't think it's a misstranselation. I think it's just Japanese people failing at english in the anime itself. Just to make it funny.

Well, I included the possibility of it being a deliberate mistranslation. Either way it's a play on the way English can sound in Japanese, which isn't immediately obvious to everyone.

Well it wasn't a deliberate mistranslation, it wasn't a mistranslation at all, the guy in the anime wasn't saying "sentimental", he was saying "centimeter". However only a somewhat knowledgeable person of both "Engrish" and the definition of the term "sentimental", would infer him to have meant "sentimental", as this Tumblr poster has done.

I agree that 'mistranslation' was the wrong word for me to use. I meant a deliberate move by the producers or writers of the show to use an 'Engrish' word. The character probably doesn't know how to say it, but I know the writers are aware of both the meaning and spelling of Sentimental. My point was that it's not obvious to everyone by far.
