ou- ouh... This is unsettling

Because just animating the facial expressions makes watching animations a little awkward.

Notice pretty much every cartoon from the west does the same thing, not as exaggerated, but still, *grunts, "ouahs" and all of the above to coincide with body movements and faces.

I've always hated that. WHY? Why do anime characters make that sound? They make it when they see something, they make it when they're thinking of something, they make it when they're not thinking about anything, they make it when they're hungry, they make it when they're bored, they make it when they're embarrassed, they make it when they're pissed, they make it when they're happy. THEY MAKE IT EVERY TIME ANYTHING HAPPENS. Why? No one makes that sound IRL. What is that sound supposed to mean?

I dunno man, I loose my train of thought a lot, and I tend to make a sort of "ah" sound when I remember it. 'Course I talk to myself all the time too, so maybe I'm just crazy.

>implying Japanese voice acting isn't the best in the world

Anyways they do the same thing in live action. My guess is that it's just a quick way to show how someone is feeling. Those clips were only a fraction of a second right? But you could tell what emotion each little sound meant. Probably just another Japanese quirk. They tend to make small sounds a lot. Like old Japanese guys and their "ohhhhs"

I don't think a normal 'Hmm' sound picks up well when they record voices so they needed something clearer to take its place

Not very creative, but fitting.

i hear people make that sound in real life all the time. normally out of actual shock and not random mundane things though. i think the amount they do it in anime is more than is seen in real life but not to the point where it is confusing the amount its used.
