how would the philosophers stone be useful in our world?

Before we had a solid grasp on what chemistry was, there was "alchemy". The reason we call the associate "the elements" with earth, fire, water, and air was because the furthest anyone back then could break anything down were these four elements.

It was believed that there could be an actual stone that would turn non-precious metals into gold. Lead would be the easiest to change into gold because they were both very heavy, and there was lots of lead.

If this is true, Can you imagine if there was an afterlife? He drinks Mercury, feels pain dies, But he never realizes he is dead. And wakes up in a new world where he never ages. He achieved immortality, But only in death.
