Is it only me or do others prefer the second translation too? I appreciate things like bento, itadakimasu, arigatou and baka. Sugou can be accepted but is a little bit over the edge, but oishii is just overdoing it, not needed at all. All in all, second one feels more natural.

I don't want tons of translator notes clogging up the screen and I only glance at subtitles.

I recently watched a Girls und Panzer sub. There was a point where the words "Rub a dub dub, thanks for the grub!" were said.

The second option is actually an amazing idea to get people to learn languages. Just take a basic or long-running anime or show, and every episode replace one English word with a word of origin (of the show). That way you have an entire show to memorize a word until it becomes obvious what it means in what context

Continue this till every English word is replaced

Ta-Da, you now know how to spell and pronounce every foreign equivalent of every word they used in the proper context

I always liked reading the little footnotes, getting some cultural explanation behind what I just read.

Literal translations? As opposed to sarcastic translations?
