The real reason is that Japanese people have high blood pressure so when they do get aroused they might have a nose bleed its very common.

The idea is that you blush because blood is rushing up to your face, so if you blush really hard, the blood would eventually burst or something and exit the most convenient way.

I don't think so? It's just a facet of anime exaggerating things by their nature. think of the nosebleed as being an exaggerated blush.
