it's a reference to the nervegear in sword art online. a virtual reality headgear system that was corrupted so if you die in the game, or remove/unplug the headgear. it's send fatal electric signals into your brain. they beat the bad guy and fixed it though :o

yea, not like electric chair shocked though. just pulses sent into your brain that cause it to stop. if you have the time i recommend watching the series. some parts are better than others but overall it's a really nice series.

You die in the game, you die in real life.

Couldn't someone hack the headgear or something?

Hacking does happen (via router I guess), but as far as I know, no one can hack (or at least attempts to) hack the headgear itself.

"tampering or prolonged power outage with the Nerve Gear, the gear that simulates in-game character control by redirecting brain signals, also means death."

The below pic is from an anime called Sword Art Online. It's about putting something called a "Nervegear" to go into a virtual world. It works with multiple video games in the anime. The above image is probably just a prototype to play video games on which means we're getting close to having the technology to make something similar to a Nervegear. TLDR: Video game helmet from anime.
