I get where you're coming from, but what would you rather they do? I mean, the people are already dead. It's not like they can travel to France to comfort the grieving. Maybe they could take up a collection or something, but if I'm honest it's not like I would donate to it, so I don't really have a right to judge them for not doing that.

Look, as a resident of New York State, one of the things that really touched me in the aftermath of 9/11 was how much people around the world noticed and cared. I mean, it didn't remove the fact that the attack happened, but it was nice all the same. I think it's a little unrealistic to just get mad at people for showing solidarity without doing anything, because as far as I can see, there's not a whole lot the average person can do other than express that they care.

Are there shallow people using this for reputation points? Yes, but I'd argue that if you're just mindlessly getting upset at this without proposing alternate actions with real benefits for the people of France, you're almost as shallow. still luv you tho bby

Let's also remember that while it seems like people aren't doing a lot, that's because we just don't know what these millions of different people might be involved in. Like after 9/11 how blood donation centers had to actually turn people away because their facilities were overfilled. Also the fact that when the Japanese earthquakes hit, hundreds of donation programs were extended by communities along with millions of individual donations (my favorite part about the media publicity is when people tried taking advantage of the nuclear power plant instability and using it to stir anti-nuclear power fervor it backfired, and everyone was telling news programs and politicians to shut the **** up and worry about the people whose lives are endangered)

We should all be more optimistic about what people may be doing beyond our limited knowledge. When crisis strikes the western world, its admirable how quickly we usually come together as a species.

That's the problem. I can safely say that practically none of them really care, it's an ego boost "Look how great of a person I am for caring."

This isn't a tragedy for them, it's a trend. A trend they will completely forget quickly once something else takes their attention.

How about.. send money?
The media acts like it's a tragedy, so there's probably some movement/organization regulated by the government that allows you to help with financial assistance.

In addition to being everything, money is also power. Anyone that says it isn't thinks we live in the Matrix.
Nothing shows greater support than relinquishing some of your power to help strangers.
Prayers won't swipe bread off the table. Donating will. That's real sacrifice. That's true caring.

i guess but if they wanted to show compassion to the victims theres probably better options then just a facebook filter no?

I'm sure there is. But what would you recommend that's within the time and money budget of your average Joe?
I've seen a lot of people complain "They should do more!" but nobody actually give any indication as to what "more" should be.

totally.

i almost feel like getting up in arms about people hopping on to trends in the hopes of boosting their reputation is just starting to become another form of boosting that other person's reputation.

by their logic of people can only care if they have the means and effort to effect significant change, only people with lots of time and money are allowed to care in those situations. that's a little unrealistic.

of course people are shallow and hollow. but trying to say that the perceived minority of people that use the facebook filter that actually do care can't use it because only shallow people use the filter is also unrealistic.

As a french, I agree. It's just one click on facebook, but it's like virtualy wearing black armbands. Of course everyone who wear this armband dont care on the same level, and maybe some of them dont care at all. But At least we know that this massacre did'nt went unnoticed, and appart some stupid non-conformist hipsters, no one i know is saying those flag filters are a bad thing and nobody questions the motivation of the people all over the world who uses it.

We dont need money, we dont need military or police support. You can send those to Lebanon, Kenya, Irak... Those country need that kind of things to recover from last month's terrorist attacks. In France the only thing we need is a litle courage, because we already have all the money, police, and army we need. showing support is the only thing you can to to help, and as little and futile as it might seem, those trendy flag filters are a good way to do it.

Les commandos (Chant para - paroles) And here I am, listening to French military songs, along with Russian, and a dash of German.

THE WEST WILL BE VICTORIOUS! VIVE LA FRANCE! FÜR DIE VATERLAND! ЗА РОДИНУ!

ok, I'm done

Is your cynism an ironic thing, or you atually believe that everyone else is as apathetic as you?

Meh, I think it's stupid, but people are allowed to be stupid. It doesn't hurt me, and I can't do anything about it, so why bother? It doesn't deter terrorism, the only thing that really might do that is to just not talk about it. Don't even acknowledge that they exist and that might keep them from doing it again. Perhaps not though, and there's no way we could get people to actually do it anyway in order to find out. So like I said, I'll just ignore it until this whole thing blows over.
