My old Russian is a bit rusty, but that name means "Ivan, Son of Ivan, (who is) of Ivan"

Pretty much right.

Back in the days people would be called like that there.

As first name they mostly took the name of the grandfather oder grandmother to honor him/her.
Second name was the an "of <name of the father>" to honor the father.
And third, or Lastname, was again the name of the grandfather of the father who was mentioned in the second name... to honor him.

It was all about honor and respect for the older people.
