Problem with dubs:
-Often low budget with bad casting
-trying to adapt Japanese culture and etiquette into English is near impossible without making it sound stupid/forced

Reason not to watch dubs:
Movies/television series should be watched in the language that it was originally created in, as that is the artistic vision of the director and writers, which should be respected. Doesn't matter if it's Japanese, French, Russian, Arabic or anything, always watch subbed as that is how it is meant to be watched. Otherwise you're just watching an interpretation of the original thing.

No one is going to watch it but Inuyahsa had one of the best dubs

Decent dubs
Black Lagoon
Soul Eater
Samurai Champloo
And SAO wasnt bad

most of the main reasons have been said but one other reason people dont watch dubs is because its not it is not the "purest" form of the anime. Dubs will cut some wording to westernize what the character is saying and people will get mad about that. dont have a ******* clue why but they do

I know how you feel. I've never gotten dubs.
User avatar #67 to #66 - zocard (08/27/2014) [-]
I have only once... But to answer your question I like sub anime better because it is the voices that were originally put to those characters by the creator or whatever so it jsut seems more fitting to me.
#69 to #67 - neefew [OP](08/27/2014) [-]
I prefer dubs because I'm too lazy to pay full attention to a single screen. I prefer to do something else while watching stuff I mean, right now, I'm watching something as I'm typing
User avatar #70 to #69 - zocard (08/27/2014) [-]
mmm true that is a problem sometimes but I usually only watch anime's that really catch my interest and am willing to give my full attention to.
#72 to #70 - neefew [OP](08/27/2014) [-]
But I'm not going to pay full attention to all 345687906754689063546578 episodes of One Piece/ Bleach/ Pokemon/ Naruto/ Naruto Shippuden
#71 to #70 - neefew [OP](08/27/2014) [-]
I guess it just differs depending on the person.
User avatar #73 to #71 - zocard (08/27/2014) [-]
ya that's usually how most things are honestly. of course there are some few animes that are actually good when dubbed, but again most dubbed anime dubbed animes don't have as much care in selecting who voices who besides generalities from what I've seen.
User avatar #74 to #73 - zocard (08/27/2014) [-]
that typo though... looks like i finally got dubs...
#75 to #73 - neefew [OP](08/27/2014) [-]
I'm told that my favourite anime see .gif has great dubs so yay me.

I never really got into FMA because it was just too big, I like the animes that have around 12-24 episodes and more if it was particularly good. I'm not saying FMA is bad, on the contrary from what I've seen it's pretty good, but it's just got so many episodes I just don't really want to get that committed to it.
#78 to #76 - neefew [OP](08/27/2014) [-]
It's so good though. I've never seen a bad review of it. Your loss I guess. I can't force you to watch it.
#9 - omghekilledkenny (08/26/2014) [-]
You have seem some of the better dubs out there so far, but for more obscure animes the dubs are usually far worse, for example I generally prefer subs, but on good dubs like cowboy bebop I like the dub better, btw I was going to post on your recommend with 20 anime and cartoons in details for sub and dub on my prefs, but I will do a quick condenced version here.

Avatar Series: American cartoon that starts with avatar and Ends with Legend of Korra I believe it has won an emmy or two.

Steins Gate: Sci fi theme, but so much deeper, I have heard the subs are better on this one.

Code Geass Lelouche of Rebellion: Scifi mecha based anime; I prefer the subs as it is set in Japan.

#14 to #9 - omghekilledkenny (08/26/2014) [-]
Also, I am also constantly reposting so I don't loose my wark like last time, and dont you dare delete them, Also Some people just prefer dubs over subs, and thats the way it is.
#16 to #9 - neefew [OP](08/26/2014) [-]
I don't mean to disappoint you but I already have those three animations there needs to be a better word for cartoons and anime in fact. I finished Korra only two days ago.

Try the word animation
#22 to #19 - neefew [OP](08/26/2014) [-]
I don't really like that word. It just seems too vague but it's better than Cartoons and anime.

For a while I shortened it to cartoons but that's like calling manga comics or action figures dollies.

Okay watashi no messiah? Sad but good and a bit more obscure
#33 to #31 - neefew [OP](08/26/2014) [-]
Unfortunately, that's too obscure and the website I use can't find it. Could you point me to a place where I could watch it (without giving away personal details or downloading anything)

Whenever there's an anime with a good dub, I'll watch it dubbed. The keyword here is 'good' dub, because in my experience dubs are pretty 50/50. Often, there's either bad dubs or no dubs.

So we have bad dubs:

-Lack of localisation budget, resulting in bad voice acting. Stuff that can be expected to be popular usually gets a decent budget, but it's no guarantee.
-Voice actors trying too hard to match the lip flaps, resulting in a mangled speech pattern. (For an extreme example, although not from an anime, compare Yuna's voice acting in Final Fantasy X to FF X-2)
-This is probably overly specific, but bad dubs often give stoic characters a rather breathy voice (i'm glaring at you, Claymore)

And sometimes there's just no dubs at all, because either:

-Lack of interest. there's just no agency who thinks localising it will pay off.
-Lack of time. For long running shows, dubs are often many dozen episodes behind. With an airing rate of one episode a week (standard in Japan), we're talking years behind here. For shorter, seasonal shows, dubs will only be released long after the original run is finished, meaning none of the newer stuff will be dubbed anytime soon.

For a list of good dubbing at work, visit tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SugarWiki/SuperlativeDubbing?from=Main.SuperlativeDubbing
For notorious examples of bad dubbing, go to tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Macekre

Problem with dubs:
very poor voice actors who kill off 90% of a character by not knowing **** about their job. Also, you can't translate it literally, so sometimes they are different from the original thing.

In some cases I heard the voice actors struggling to say some japanese names (Like in Persona 3 Portable [it's a game, but it has the same problems with dubs], where they literally had to slow down with reading to spell the name of the city properly.)

Also, dubs are always dumbed down comparing to the original thing. Sailor Moon with English dubs is about 20% of the real thing, for example.
User avatar #91 - bindmind (08/27/2014) [-]
... All those dubs are good dubs. Those are within the 95th percentile.
#89 - tenlolilimit (08/27/2014) [-]
Ghost Stories is great dubbed because it did really bad in japan so when they handed it over for dubbing they basically said "do whatever it takes to make this get good ratings" so the actors and other staff got to make up their own lines and it's pretty funny because of it.
#88 - anon (08/27/2014) [-]
The quality of most dubs is abysmal - simple as that. The voice acting is just cringeworthy compared to the source material. For example, consider Clannad - the original is considered a classic, but the dub is so bad it's hard to get through.
I will say however that Haruhi and Lucky Star (and possibly Full Metal Panic) had very good dubs.

Of course, if you don't notice the difference, then feel free to watch whatever makes you happy.
User avatar #86 - ipwnallnubz (08/27/2014) [-]
Full Metal Panic! has a very good dub, and I can go either way with Strike Witches though FMP! isn't actually finished just keep hoping for another season and Strike Witches is definitely not for everyone, thanks to the ludicrous amounts of fanservice. I keep hoping they'll throw more plot into it, but all they give us is pantyshots.
User avatar #84 - PVTDickStryker (08/27/2014) [-]
Watch AoT dubbed.

I normally prefer Dubs over subs Black Lagoon, Trigun, Hellsing, Burst Angel are a few I particularly enjoyed. but AoT's is just horrendous, despite being leagues more popular than the ones I named.
