>Not knowing that words sometimes take on different meanings when they become part of another language.
>Not knowing that "otaku" has at least 3 meanings even in Japan. (Fun fact: otakus in Japan wear the title like a badge of honor.)
Fantastic!

fun fact. Japanese people do not wear the "badge" with honor. "Otakus" are hated more there then they are here.

Maybe badge of honor was a bad choice of words, but otakus will refer to themselves as such, and they don't say it like it's a bad thing.

your words are exactly what i mean. Refering to yourself as an otaku is looked down upon by everyone else.

isn't it like how some people use "gay" as an insult, some people use it to describe the things a person does, and some people wear it as a badge of honor.

and the original word has nothing to do with where we use it for.

I suppose. otaku's most direct meaning is "fanatic"
You can be a fanatic of many things but some weaboos decided to start calling themselves otakus thinking it meant hardcore anime fan and thus otaku and weaboo now mean the same thing to society.

Gruesome (English) - "Repellently frightful and shocking; horrific or ghastly ."
Origin: Grusom(Norwegian/Danish)/Grausam(German) - Cruel.

A word can change meaning when borrowed by another language. If not for that simple fact, modern dictionaries would be horribly lacking.
