Never read, but from what I heard people and pokemon actually die in the manga, apparently its much more intense.

Gold Silver, at the end, what happened to Pryce?
Ruby Sapphire near the end... that one explains itself if you read that far, however I cant remember if viz kids skipped that part or not.

How about that Arbok getting sliced in half?

- This was Kogas Arbok which has the ability to regenerate every part of its body. Only its Head has to be unharmed. This is solved later when Red,Blue,Green and Yellow fight against the Elite 4 .

I know theres several mangas, I don't know if they die in any particular one, or they don't die in any of the mangas at all.

Through the series of 151 Pokemon, noone ever died :) But some times you really think that and you realize that they CAN die. And it's not only a fight between Pokemon. Also their trainers are under attack. It's more like trainers and their weapons are their pokemon but that is just my opinion :)
