Young girls like the idea of meddling around with people's love life, but they don't like it when other girls are involved. How my sister explained it, women would rather find out that the guy they like is gay rather than interested in another woman because it means the problem lies within the man rather than her "The reason he's not into me is because he's gay." is easier to accept than "The reason he's not into me is because I'm fat/ugly/annoying." . And most of the characters that are in anime young girls have crushes on and would rather them shack up with another guy than a girl because they get jealous.
