As an engineering student, I believe that art has a value that pure mathematics cannot touch. If you look at any car company, you will find both types of people working together to produce a product.

A person who designs cars was once someone who painted, sculpted, or sketched. Saying that someone's hobby is useless can lead to them giving it up and writing off a ton of employment opportunities.

As an aspiring musician and game designer, I appreciate all kinds of art. That includes drawing, painting, hell even knitting and sculpting. It's better than being unproductive. At least the person accomplishes something. Etc.

See, that's your problem - you see productivity as merely economic. I see productivity as becoming better as a person whether that's in the form of music, writing, math, whatever. But I have mad respect for artists. Sure, you should have a steady source of income before you venture in the arts, but it's not like art itself is a waste of time. Better than nothing.

And who cares if I "make it"? I have enough of a programming background to have a steady job if necessary. But art is art. It's meant for enjoyment.

lol if everyone listened to people like you, there would be no good music or successful artists. I'm not even talking about mainstream success, but playing shows and **** is fairly reasonable. To say that it is an absolute truth that I will fail is giving up for nothing. And that is exactly the opposite of productivity.
