I use Squares and Rectangles as a simile very often.

It's a good philosophy.

But good philosophies aren't all Squares and Rectangles.

You know...looking at that picture...I think the arrows are backwards.

I mean, when I look at it, the message I get is that a square is not a rectangle, but a rectangle is a square.

I could be reading that wrong, for I am a silly man, but...well, that's what I get from it.

ANIME IS JUST A JAPANESE ABBREVIATION OF 'ANIMATION'

MANGA ARE SIMPLY COMICS CREATED IN THE RIGHT-to-LEFT STYLE COMMON TO JAPAN

Why do some people call 'Avatar TLA' an 'American Anime'? Because they combine some tropes from Western Cartoons with tropes from Eastern ones.

The more you know, *************.

Actually some cartoons are animated. Anime is the japanese sort of abbreviation for animation. So technically it is the same, but anime has come to mean "Animated show with a specific style from Japan."
an·i·me  [an-uh-mey] Show IPA
noun
a Japanese style of motion-picture animation, characterized by highly stylized, colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sexuality.

Though, it used to be called Japanimation if I'm correct, but as I said. We just say anime and we think of Japans animation style.

A show does not need to subscribe to a particular art style to be anime.
The only qualifiers are that it's animated and that it's Japanese (whether you want to take that to mean "made in Japan" or "intended primarily for a Japanese audience" is up to you)

That's the definition. You can't change that.
Big eyes are almost there all the time and you can easily see if it's an anime or not when watching it. Though it's hard to define all of them, as well as cartoons. Crayon shin-chan is an example of this.

It's not the definition.
Believe it or not, just because some dictionary defines a word some way does not mean it's the be all end all of what can be classified as anime.
Tell me, does this show (Sazae-san) strike you as having a "typical anime art style"? Or for that matter a futuristic setting and violent and sexual content?

No, anime - as the term is used in the west - is Japanese animation. Simple as that. Trying to add more qualifiers to the definition will only ever exclude shows that are clearly anime from the definition.

"Sazae-san is old, therefore it is not anime"
Also implying the mainstream art style in anime isn't continously changing.
Fallacies all around.
Also, Sazae-san is still running if I'm not mistaken.

I can't believe you honestly think a series is defined as anime by the art style it uses. By your definition, series cease to be anime when they get old and outdated.

I didn't say it wasn't an anime. I actually said "That ANIME is old as ****."
There are different styles of art, for example the one in your picture or Clannad. Then there's Soul Eater.

You forgot that the definition is that it is from Japan. It's not defined by art only. By your logic spongebob is an anime.

Um, no Spongebob isn't anime because it isn't from Japan?

My definition is that anime is animation from Japan, dude.
I argued that although all anime draws from the same reservoire of visual and other tropes (by virtue of all originating in the same culture), a series is not defined as anime by its art style, making a point by adding a picture from Sazae-san, which you said was irrelevant because Sazae-san has been running for 40 years.

Saying all anime has to have a "an anime art style" to be anime is like saying that all characters in anime have to have Japanese body language.
While it's technically correct that all characters in anime use Japanese body language, you're looking at the symptoms and not the cause. The reason why (practically) all anime characters use Japanese body language is that all anime is from Japan, and the same is the case with art style. Most anime looks similar to some degree, but this isn't because anime is defined by its art style, it's because it's defined by its country of origin, meaning that the visual designers all draw from the same pot of visual tropes. Despite the fact that most anime look similar, something is not made not anime if the drawers decide to experiment and try something new.
