Can somebody explain why people like Elfen Lied, Mirai Nikki and other anime where there's so much gratuitous violence mixed with cute/adorable moments? MFW watching an anime like that.

It's kinda fun watching. Everything's all nice and happy, and **** starts falling apart. Ever read a tragic play?

Because all the cutesy **** emphasises the crazy mad crap.

It's all about contrast for me, higurashi no naku koro does it best. Starts off like some generic anime and then warps it into a horror theme with disturbing imagery, creepy character changes and just a plot that keeps you guessing.

Does a good job of leading you into a false sense of security before being disturbing.

Yeah, the OVAs, however, get rid of ALL of the disturbing/horror scenes and replaces them with fan service and more moe, a true monstrosity.

First OVA series helped explain some more stuff, with the exception of the first episode. The second one ruined it though.

If you see the manga, nyu is naked under kouta's covers when Yuka kisses him as he wakes up. Naked nyu then goes and starts making out with Yuka while exposing her chest and feeling her up right in front of kouta

I just watched Hellsing Ultimate, barely any cutesy stuff. Full on gore and violence.

Alucard is a badass vampire, not a 10 year old loli that chops people's heads off

I've never seen Elfen Lied, but my brother has it downloaded. I skimmed through each episode to see what its like and got to a part where some kids were brutally bashing an innocent puppy to a bloody pulp(no idea what the context of it was tho)..was horrifying D:

I watched one scene where a little girl gets chopped in half. Say what you want, but scenes like that just put me off and made me never want to watch it again

Well, there is goofy **** like Seras' Harkonnen Spirit dreams and the time Seras defused a possible Alucard/Anderson rampage in a public place by leading a tour group of senile Japanese old people caricatures right in between them. So, I guess mostly Seras provides comic relief. Everybody else is a Tenth Degree Badass.

I barely give notice to those, think they are just eye relief from all that blood and decapitation, maybe they remind you its not all that serious lol

Yes, that I can understand and relate to. I watched Death Note for the first time recently, and was into that, because there were almost no ******** fanservice/kawaii moments, just detective/fantasy thriller. But it seems, as the people below suggested, to supply a certain existing demand, although one I will probably never understand.

Then you could give Shiki a watch. It's the most scary and brutal anime that I've seen so far. No lolis and great mystery.

Death Note is a category of its own, nothing can compare to it really. Quite a masterpiece

yeah I agree, the ending was kinda rushed...not so climactic

but not so bad enough to shame the whole series

Yea the series was good up until Near came in, i thought after that it wasn't the same

Because it can be genuinely creepy. Believe it or not, creepy anime is in fact a niche that Mirai Nikki both fills and is a good gateway into.

Also, gratuitous self insertion.

I like it because it's not your everyday anime. It's like porn. It's okay to like normal porn but sometimes you just want to see some crazy **** .
