It's a series called Sword Art Online. The series is great for people that want to get into anime and like games, it's an enjoyable series but due to the fact that it's extremly popular between 12 years olds that keep using the word EPIC to describe the series it gets a lot of hate. The first 4 episodes are fantastic but when a crappy romance starts it goes down and after episode 15 the quality takes a dive worthy of a fukken olympic gold medal.

It's still a nice series that many people seem to enjoy though. Give it a try.

If I remember correctly the reason he was so sure he could win is he had just gotten an item that restores his health in battle from one of the furthest tier bosses they had reached. That's why his health restored in the fight.

Nah, Battle Healing is one of the skills he's got equipped is all. The reason he's so confident here is that the lot of them are like average level ~45 and he's level 78. The sheer difference in stats alone would make him all but invincible. Then you consider that every ten levels the maximum number of skills you can have equipped at once goes up as well...

Doesn't count as powercreep but I'll leave that.
As for the rest... Leveling up usually gives you defense aswell as the rest of the base **** stats. If your defense is high enough, you just can't be damaged end of story lol
It's like trying to take out a tank with an army of 9mm pistol wielding civilians.
At this point he was maybe 60, they finish the game when he's 70 or so. I think 78 was his max.
Also, I don't think they actually mention their levels in canon.

78 is the level he's at in this scene. That is nowhere near his max, given that this side-story takes places on the 47th floor and the Aincrad story arc ends just after the boss battle on the 75th. If my memory serves me correctly Kirito's level is around 96 when he and Heathcliff have their final confrontation.

This is episode 4... He couldn't have been 78 already! Damn I didn't realize how much he slowed down as the series progressed, he only finishes the game around level 80 for sure for sure.
I'll have to re-watch the info-mercials. There's a lot of extra info given in the shorts at the end of the episodes.

Keep in mind, the Anime combined the first and second light novels, where the first played out the main story of him completing the game, and the second was side story filler like this.
Plus there's a ******* of timeskip, As it was mentioned pk'ing only became a real problem a year or so into the game, I may be wrong, don't hate and if Laughing Coffin is still alive at this point, which they were mentioned to be, then it had to be at least 9 months in, but less than a year and a half

... Kay see, that's why your info is wrong. You're basing everything off the anime, which will give you skewed level information. My knowledge comes from the original Light Novel.

Page 67 of the second volume "Aincrad 02":
“——About 400 every 10 seconds? That’s the amount of damage
you nine dealt to me. I’m on level 78, my HP is 14,500... add that I
automatically regain 600 points every 10 seconds with «Battle
Healing». You all can’t defeat me even if you keep hitting me for hours.”

Oddly enough I'm having trouble pinning down exactly where the LN gives Kirito's level information towards the end of Aincrad's main story arc. Still, I'm fairly certain he was somewhere in the mid to upper 90's.

Funny, I had the exact same thought. The LN at least doesn't give an actual number in that section, but rather uses the opportunity to go into detail concerning ALO's lack of an actual leveling system. I imagine they thought the level itself was unimportant since no direct comparison could be made between progress in SAO and ALO.

Yes, I just went through all the late-series side-stories for any mention, but there was nothing to be found. It's strange, for some reason I remember the LN being very good at reminding the reader of what level Kirito was at, and yet I can find only a few instances where exact numbers are mentioned even in passing. Very odd...

It's almost like he said, "You know what, the readers don't give a **** anymore, Kirito's the strongest in the game and that's all that matters. But for good measure, let's add a sex scene."

The rest of the LN is written so well, even if it is a bit cliched in some areas, so I really do have to wonder what the hell that man was smoking when he wrote 16.5. I have no issues with throwing in a sex scene, but seriously now? That chapter was written like a really bad fanfic.

I remember there being an author after note showing a few character final levels and some skills, pretty sure it was removed off of where i saw it but Kirito was lvl 96. (side note most the side characters in the final fight were still in the 70-80 area)
