Miyake island has gained the nickname “Island of the gas masks” due to Mount Oyama, an active volcano that has erupted several times in recent history. Poison gas has constantly leaked from the volcano since the 2005 explosion, residents are required to carry a gas mask at all times. When sulphur levels rise quickly sirens across the island go off.
