The keys CLEARLY have symbols over each letter. You might want to get those eyes of yours checked.

Japanese phones and keyboards use kana and romaji.

Very easy actually -

They have three alphabets - Kanji (a sign meaning a word), hiragana and katakana (which is basicly - "normal" alphabet).

Computers and phones use roman letters, and since every hiragana/katakana can be spelled with roman letters, they just type the japanese letter, with roman letters...

Like "Arigato" (Thanks) type A for the letter A, RI for the letter RI, and so on, after each letter, they can decide if they want the hiragana or katakana version. If they wana spell a kanji (most often more than one syllibus) they just "not" pick hiragana/katakana untill they have written the roman version of a kanji...

That just ends up with the question.

Why the **** don't they just type everything in roman letters to begin with... since they are alredy typing them in?

They're also in French, Italian, Spanish, Latin and any other language that uses the ABC alphabet. They're also in Japanese, if one wishes to type in Romaji.
