Even though people die in DBZ, I would say that it is one of the best shows for kids to watch. It's about working hard, redemption, forgiveness and offering second chances, and over-coming the seemingly impossible. Not many kids shows display these values while not being preachy/boring at the same time.

Dragonball in a nutshell:

Stronger enemy -> train -> beat enemy -> stronger enemy -> train -> beat enemy ->

It's still one of my all-time favorite nonethless.
#98 to #90 - chaoticwaffle (12/13/2012) [-]
You forgot the actual chain of events in the fights.

Stronger enemy taunts hero > Hero gets beaten down but not killed > Hero gets some power up > Hero taunts enemy > Enemy gets stronger > Enemy taunts hero > Hero gets stronger > Hero taunts enemy.

Wash, rinse, repeat until the hero wins.

Still a good show though.

Vegeta was the only 3 dimensional character. Goku was a ******* saint the whole series, so he had no where to go. Vegeta slowly worked his way from an angry, power hungry prince to having a stable and loving relationship with a human.
#79 to #71 - tvveeder (12/13/2012) [-]
Yes because Piccolo had no character development. I mean he didn't start a surly, callous ass hole who hated Goku (and humans in general for the most part) and eventually grew to really care for Gohan, Goku, and the rest of humanity. He also didn't go from a villain who wanted to destroy Earth, to eventually become the guardian of Earth either.

Oh, and let's not bring up Gohan, because he wasn't a coming of age character who developed from an innocent youth, only to have that shed over the seasons and lead to his maturation into an adult.

If you watched the Toonami version of DBZ, you'd say it was all fighting and no plot, but that was a bastardization of the series. There was a lot that happened between each battle that was cut out because CN felt like it would lose the attention of kids.

Goku was a 'saint' as you say, but his character wasn't one dimensional. He was a super powerful fighter who had strange phobias, weird habits, and was a bit awkward, yet likable by all his peers. His abilities made him the quintessential dumb jock character, but his personality made him the lovable hero. His naivety made him child like, but also ensured his character stayed the lawful good type of character.

Goku would have to be a saint to put up with this bitch.
Rewatching with the wife and she is SO harsh to goku, hes laying there warpped up in bandages after vegeta almost kills him and she is just moaning at him.

The original Dragonball was and still is my favorite. Well, after the first martial arts tournament it is. It just generally has a feel good mood, and goku isn't rediculously strong yet.

Plus they got away with much more adult situations.

Yes, but when K-on has more development in 36 episodes then DBZ has in 291, something went horribly wrong.
User avatar #115 to #45 - mcstorms (12/13/2012) [-]
K-on is easily one of the most overrated animes in history
User avatar #122 to #115 - lickilicky (12/14/2012) [-]
I'm making a comparison. When a long running action anime that tries to be deep and edgy has less development then a vastly shorter anime about cute musical girls eating cake you know something is wrong. Not saying K-on is a masterpiece, but compared to it DBZ is bad.
User avatar #123 to #122 - mcstorms (12/14/2012) [-]
Have you read the manga? Because the manga had much more story development also Vegeta alone had more character development then any other character in anime history.
User avatar #43 - churrundo (12/13/2012) [-]
i noticed that goku and vegeta are the same duality as naruto and sasuke. not that it's good or bad, i just got into anime and noticed it.
User avatar #47 to #43 - daarck (12/13/2012) [-]
no you are wrong, vegeta may be an ******* but he is a "good guy" sasuke is driven by revenge. I would be more detailed but i dont wanna give away any spoilers.
User avatar #50 to #47 - churrundo (12/13/2012) [-]
well, yeah if you go deeper you will find differences, but they both started from the same concept: lovable comedic hero that can symbolize the color red, warmth, and good. and cool/sly anti-hero that balances the other guy, can be represented with blue, cold, and shadows, in a way.

you catch mah drift? they took off from the same duality
User avatar #51 to #50 - daarck (12/13/2012) [-]
no, vegeta started evil and went good

sasuke started good and went evil

sasuke was never an anti hero, he didnt operate outside of a set of rules until later
#54 to #51 - churrundo (12/13/2012) [-]
you don't catch mah drift
User avatar #55 to #54 - daarck (12/13/2012) [-]
you are using fallacious reasoning, me saying that you are wrong is not the same thing as me not understanding you.
User avatar #58 to #55 - churrundo (12/13/2012) [-]
i'm not talking about the story (i thought they were similar but ok, they are not), i'm talking about the symbols of the characters. the very concept of duality that the creators conceived them with. they are the same classic red vs blue, yin vs yang, good vs evil (yes sasuke was good, but he turned evil. yes, vegeta turned good, but he was evil; unlike Naruto/Goku who had a morality of stone)

that is the very core of those pairs of characters. what do you think?
#62 to #58 - bibbity (12/13/2012) [-]
You're actually exactly right, Kishimoto was actually inspired quite heavily by Toriyama's work, dragon ball and dragon ball z especially - most people think this is why Naruto wears orange, like Goku does (though this may also be because the japanese consider orange to be a lucky colour). For more evidence for your theory, listen to Vegeta's speech to Majin Buu just before he becomes an hero, and compare it to Sasuke's motivations at the valley of the end.
#65 to #62 - bibbity (12/13/2012) [-]
