I've watched a lot of the more well-known ones, but I have suggestions. Unfortunately, I know nothing of Netflix availability (sorry). I'm going to countdown, starting with the ones I liked and ending with the ones I LOVED

5. Despite the reputation it gets, Naruto is pretty good. It is on the goofier side, and there are a lot of episodes, but that is the show that got me into anime. If you have a lot of time, it is worth it.

4. Code Geass. I love this show for so many reasons. It's great with suspense, great strategy-show, and manages humor and severity very well. Plenty of tear jerk moments, and the ending is just...wow.

3. Deathnote. Amazing plot line, amazing mind-games. It shares a lot of themes with Code Geass (normal high school student who's seceretly the leader of a cult-like revolution). But again, great.

2. Clannad. OH GOD THE FEELS. MAKE THEM STOP! Seriously, I have four episodes left, and I bawled straight through the last 3. Clannad itself has a lot of the bitter-sweet feels, then Afterstory goes full-blown rip your heart out and break you down.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. For SO MANY REASONS. This is, and forever will be my favorite anime. I got into it first by watching regular FMA (I can explain the difference if you like) but the story and characters are like nothing else. Every character is so deep, everything so funny or heart-wrenching or mind-blowing. This show taught me what it means to be human, with all the hopes and trials and faults that come with it.

(Oh, and if you're looking for random, mindless, unexplained gore--try Higurashi. All the characters die every 4-5ish episodes, then come back the next arc to be brutally killed in some other way. Just throwing that out there.)

Full Metal Panic gets +1 from me. Great anime, a mix of comedy, action and romance.

I've looked through most the comments so that I dont suggest ones that have already been said.. everyone has pretty much said all the good ones I know of apart from Bleach, one of my favourites!! to me that is a big must watch!!

Oh and I've been told to watch one called Akira, apparantly it's one of the older ones but nonetheless still amazing!

Really sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes, Im at work and typing very quickly!!

good luck and I hope you find an anime you love :)

Have some ducks :)

Watch berserk and Neon Genensis evangelion. They might be a bit extreme for one that have just started but they WILL leave you baffled and at unease. Precaution is needed watch something happy in between them will make the experience much better.

if your on netflix watch Gungrave, the first episode is a bit-tedious but it was just to let the audience know that their would be some scifi elements in this ******* awesome gangster show 5/5 :D

Could have gone to some other sites to look for suggestions. D gray man 1st 50 or so episodes on Netflix. Darker than Black is also a good one, but I'm only a couple episodes in.
