I recommend Soul Eater. It's a bit psychedelic at times, but the characters are great and the art is very cool. Also it's a nice action anime with great fights and pretty good animation.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, it is a really good starter for anime. It is a well rounded story that will make you laugh and shed a tear if your not careful

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann yet. It's extremely good and worth a watch if you haven't seen it already.

Slice of Life shows tend to be good gateways into anime. For that, I suggest Lucky Star, Azumanga Daioh, Manabi Straight, and Hidamari Sketch. There's also Pani Poni Dash, but it's among the craziest shows I have ever seen.

Code Geass, Deathnote and Sword Art Online are good choices for starters
