There are limitations to what you can find in anime versus what you can find in visual novels, light novels, and manga.
It's because it's on TV, really.
Which is why there are hella load of crappy VN adaptions and only some good ones.
If they'd show all the intimacy and have all this serious plot (which I ******* want), it goes against the conventions of anime which is to be silly, pointless, and act like a cartoon (well, in romance, harem, and SoL/Moe standards, anyways). Not saying there aren't anime which do well and adapt well, but whatever sells sells.
And keepin it clean is keepin it easy.
(I know you already know this though. Why am I typing this again?)
I don't want to sound stuck up or stubborn, but I won't be watching Hyouka (atleast anytime soon). I've asked three friends who said they watched it for the romance and were disappointed.
The first season has its moments, enjoyment really hinges on how cute you find the female lead. If you find her endearing, you'll get your enjoyment out of it. If you don't, then you'll be bored the whole time.
The second season, however, is pretty much objectively "meh." Both character and plot regression, with nothing of value save for a few cases of antics that the characters get into, which are all very similar to the first season anyway.
except for that sexy woman, whose return in the second season is pretty good
