Unpopular opinion:

This is actually my all-time favorite game. And I defend this scene sometimes. Not very well though.

you and me both comrade.
People rip on this scene not understanding that it was meant to look and sound dumb because he's pretending.
honestly it's the only FF game i enjoyed besides tactics, 12, and crysis core on the psp.
Also liked a few of the crystal chronicles but this isn't /v/ so i'll stop here

The story and characters are weird, but charming and the gameplay is solid.

In retrospect, the intentionally stilted, awful laughter was very well done. Even the other characters are going "the **** ?" when they look back.

This was also to my knowledge the first voice-acting final fantasy. And I personally think it was written 100% like 7 8 and 9. If you play those games, most of the dialogue doesn't fit out-loud. It's because I think maybe it wasn't supposed to be out-loud anyway.

But even with the less-than-okay voice acting overall, the context of the scene works out like you said, and this scene literally is the definition of Yuna's character. It's why Tidus begins to hate himself. And the music done in this game really, really brings out the feeling each scene is supposed to fill you with.

A scene I'd rather mock is Young Tidus saying "I hate you" to Jecht in Besaid while Rikku and Yuna very awkwardly cheer him on. That one has far less defendability.
