"Kawaii" is equivilant to "cute" and "sempai" is an honorific used when speaking to an upperclassmen or the like.

It's more of a joke that in a lot of anime, there is a girl who has a crush on an upperclassman. They want them to notice them and try to act cutesy blah blah blah. I don't really watch any anime like that but it is a stereotype. Last like half year or whatever, the joke of "Notice me, sempai" when talking to other people who would get it rose up. Once again, just from what I have seen. So this shirt is just an elaboration of that.

I don't get how there can be a fandom for a loosely related collection of cartoons. That's like saying movie fandom.

You're right, it's more like saying "the action movie fandom" since anime is a subset of cartoons and action movies would be a subset of movies. But still, it's stupid.

Although I do agree that anime fandom is a bit of a broad term, saying that anime is a subset of cartoons doesn't make sense. That's basically saying western cartoons are the basis for all animation ever. Anime comes in so many different genres like: Fighting robots, GIANT fighting robots, EVEN BIGGER GIANT fighting robots etc.

Anime are just Japanese cartoons, hence anime being a subset of cartoons. If it made you happier you could substitute "anime is a subset of animation" instead.

"sensei" is teacher though.

"sempai" is often the object of an anime girl's desire.

Sempai is actually more of an honorific Japanese people will sometimes use for someone who does the same thing, but longer. For instance, someone going to school longer than them or someone who is also a policeman, but again, who has been a policeman for a longer time than they have.

I have no idea what the word actually means but that's definitely the impression I get. The reason it gets passed around so much is because a lot of manga and anime is targeted towards children and young adults so school is a very popular setting for events to take place. That's not all though.

Another popular theme in a lot of anime is romance, even if it's only played for laughs. I'm not sure about real life but in Anime and Manga, honorifics are used like crazy. Because of all that, numerous characters might end up pegged as someone else's "Sempai" in a series. Sempai/Kohai -kohai being the opposite, someone who does the same thing as you but not as long- are pretty popular in school settings as well.

Because of all of that the usage of such terms has risen up to joke status. Not on the level of a meme but it's kinda getting there.

i think the first one is just an anime fan which is only differential from the otaku by the sheer volume of anime watched, and weather or not they know that Naruto and bleach are only extremely popular in the west. i the east they are still popular but no where near as big as they are in America. it always seems so weird to me too

Not entirely true. Clannad and Clannad After Story (After Story takes place a few weeks after where the original story left off) was about 47 episodes put together and that just kept getting better and better. All of the feels from After Story.
