L's arc was dragged out to ridiculous levels, 17 episodes of Light and L staring at each other, it was more tiring and frustrating than exciting.
Near arc was fast-paced, lot of things happened, Kira and Near only met in the penultimate episode in a spetacular climax and ending, exactly how L's arc should've been.

no, Ls ending was the true ending, my guess (based on bakuman)
is that they were put under pressure to extend the manga (For sales reasons, probably for the anime)

And botch death note, in actually I suspect they planned to end it with nears death and lights victory

and so the artistic integrity of death note was ruined

*cough* law abiding citizen

**** political correctness and the mainstream industry

Bakuman, which was made by the creators of deathnote essentially details a SUSPICIOUSLY similar managa (in the manga) that pretty much explains all of this.

Dunno, I just couldn't really warm up to him. Maybe because I was too pissed after the first arc concluded.
