Vegeta is the only character who has an arc in this show though. He is a character who has put everything he has into being the most powerful person, a person worthy of the title prince to a dying race. He is confronted by this hero Goku who just seems to not suffer for his ability, he is gifted if not in name but in natural aptitude. These two characters are near opposites on the spectrum one is in it for them selves one is in it for the ride and for those around them. While Goku really never undergoes a change Vegeta even switches sides and tries to better him self to see if maybe he can improve his ability by being a better person. While it seems he is still his same Type A personality, still an ass outwardly and still a very "driven" person he has a subtle change beginning. He starts to realize that he may never overcome Goku that his struggles and triumphs might mean nothing, that he a prince is outdone by a commoner. This shatters his ego, his world view and denies him much of his purpose. In an attempt to do right for his name he signs a pact with Majin in hopes to gain the power through alternative means. However when all is lost when all of the heroes lay victim to Buu its Vegeta who fights as our hero. Vegeta knowing that he is no match for Buu decides to forfeit his life in hopes that the resulting explosion of all of his built up rage, his innate power, and results of a lifetime of training might just be enough for overcome Buu and protect his child. With full knowledge that he will die and will not be given a good afterlife like Goku he never the less charges in and with (as of that time) the largest explosion we have seen in DBZ obliterates miles and miles around him in one final act. This is where DBZ should have ended Buu should have been over come with the sacrifice of a Hero who was originally an antagonist. His arc has so much more punch and the Buu saga so much more fulfilling with that ending, for me the show ended with Vegeta's last stand.

beautifully said.
and you are right, the show would have been marvelous if it had ended right there.
but we never really met majin buu, we met babidi, but not the one who does the leg work.
Yes the sacrifice was later shown to be in vain but it also opened up into a new part of the story. vegeta's complete cocoon like transformation, and his unrivaled power gave him the chance to prove himself once again. gaining 24 more hours in the real world. he used this time to help defeat the ever growing power of majin buu. and showing that he wasn't all bad, there is a kind heart trapped inside. a small fat boy with dreams of candy and fun.
All though vegeta makes dragon ball z he is not the center of it. and that's a fact we all have to live with.
because majin buu lived we were able to see his sadistic side we call kid buu
vegeta showed his valor once again. kid buu tosses him around like a ragdoll and he just keeps getting up. he just doesn't quit. and that's something that says more than his sacrifice.
The ending also solved many problems. majin buu was defeated with the people's energy. this means goku no longer has to solve the problem of "who saves earth after him" it was a teaching experience for the people of earth to come together and defeat majin buu using Mr. satan as a public face of trust, hope, and ambition.
it's the subtle things that people miss.

I take major issue with the way they handled Vegeta's sacrifice they didnt even make it a cliff hanger at the end of that episode they show Buu reforming it totally removed the power of the scene. The strength of the self sacrifice was precisely because he is a character we wouldnt not expect it from. He is a person who has literally spent his whole life living for him self he is the last person we would expect to commit self sacrifice on the off chance that he MIGHT be able to defeat Buu. The point of this event is that Vegeta finally found a way that he could at the end better Goku, that here was on instance where the Prince could pull the weight. The Show could have continued a new Era or whatever after this event but the Idea of ending the DBZ era with Vegeta's death has a beautiful kind of symmetry. Vegeta was the first real Villain in the DBZ timeline so Vegetas story begins with him as an Antagonist who is defeated by a commoner. Vegeta then kinda joins the Z fighters in hopes that he will over come Goku. Vegeta feels a huge amount of pressure to live up to his prince title and achieve the super sayan status, he is defeated in a very unglorified way to Freiza who then is beat by Goku. Then Vegeta finally kinda catches up and becomes a Super Sayan plus some in the Cell saga and again is bestest by not only Goku but Gokus child. Finally in the Buu Era everyone is beaten, no one can stand up to Buu not even Vegeta. It is at this moment that Vegeta that he can finally overcome Goku not in life but in death, that he the Prince of Sayans can charge into a battle he cannot win, to die a death with no one to see him and nearly no one to morn his passing and destroy him self in hopes of being the salvation of all. So the story would have concluded with the first Villain being the Hero. The prince would have lived up to his title, and finally in his final act of life out do Goku. Instead his death was quickly shown to be meaningless again.

I get what you are saiyan.
And I agree completely. unfortunately this isn't a perfect world, and instead of revelling over what didn't happen, I accept what did happen. I would also like to point out how much vegeta is hated by akira toriyama. vegeta is hard cased, and evil to the core. everything he does he had to do the hard way. Goku gets super saiyan and gives up none of his pride. vegeta has to grovel on his hands and knees eating dirt and being showered by meteorites to obtain super saiyan.
goku and gohan just kinda develop into a super saiyan 2, vegeta not only had to discover super saiyan 2 but then had to perform 2 years in the hyperbolic time chamber 3 years of 500G training, and a complete possession to master it.
Goku then sort of just gets super saiyan 3. no explanation, no extreme training. he can just do it because he's dead. so even though I love the character to death, there is nothing we can really do about the story, and complaining about it is kinda pointless. The story is still marvelous for sprouting off a parody of journey to the west.

Fortunately, according to the movie, Vegeta FINALLY passes Goku, something he's been striving to do the whole series. the problem is, he doesn't care all that much, and the explanation of how he got much further than Goku while they were both training during that time period is absent.

the explanation is there though.
vegeta forfeited his pride for the sake of his family
that's what makes him stronger.
while goku fought bills not to save the world, not to protect his family but for one reason "I wanted to fight bills-sama" the most arrogant thing ever said by goku.
that is the explanation. He's losing his touch, while vegeta is just beginning to find his.

Tho I agree with your vegeta part, it has to be said that goku worked very hard aswell for his power. King Kai training, space pod training... For every enemy he had to face he trained his ass off!

You know what.. I love Vegeta, not beause he's powerful, not because he's Bad ass...but because he's a character who is seriously deep to me. He is raised to believe he is this ancient legend who will be above everyone else, only to be outdone constantly by someone who hardly even knew he was a Saiyan..I like Vegeta because he is essentially the kind of guy who has to be the best, but he begins to realize one day that he just can't be better than Goku (www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4Fqeq1VWdE) He realizes he just can't be better..and he's okay with it...

Well, at least vegeta will be a better father than Goku...I mean that guy gave time to his kids. Goku was always "dead" or running away from his responsibilities of being a father. Vegeta is best saiyan.

Everyone is talking about how complex Vegeta is but the creator didn't like him and I think it shoes in the writing.

I absolutely loved Vegeta in the Namek saga. He was witty, rude and merciless but at the same time clever and endearing. After Namek he had a few shining moment but the writing boiled down essentially to Him screaming kakorot and screwing up fights because of his arrogance. He became an egotistical 2nd place character and I think it is because Toriyama didn't want him there in the first place.

If he had been more like the Vegeta from Namek (which I think he breifly was while fighting Android 19) he may have been my favorite character in the series but that just isn't how it worked out.
