With the +45 episodes om Clannad you develop a much closer relationship to the characters than you do in Ano Hana, imo.

Ano hana was sad. Clannad demanded almost a river of manly tears over the course of the two seasons.

Anohana isn't even close. No anime is close to Clannad and Clannad after story. Do not waste it, enjoy every, single, second of it. Make time for it. Never rush it.

Both make you fall in love with something and then take it away in a tragic way. Technically, I hate them, but god damn I love Clannad.

Are you kidding me? Clannad is Better?

Just listening to Anohana's ending song and reading the translated lyrics makes you cry already.. it tops out the entire season of Clannad.. That's how good Anohana is..

In Anohana you understand why the characters in the stories are acting the way they do and you feel compassion to the characters.. They are real feelings.

In Clannad when a character did something.. what comes to my mind is... "well that was weird", "why would you do that?", "Aww she cried"...

Don't get me wrong Clannad is fine. But It's not even close to Anohana. Even people who don't watch anime once they saw it they are hooked..

I watched Anohana and it made a big impact on me. Now I discoverec Clannad through people commenting about Anohana. I watched the entire season... sadly there were A LOT of Boring times watching Clannad. It was a sad story but the stories are forced. I was expecting something to Clannad that it would make an impact but it didn't. And now I would even watch the second season. I watched Anohana again and it was more engaging watching it the second time. Can't wait for the movie. Clannad didn't even touched Anohana interms of impact after watching it. I am sure people here who are sayong Clannad is more of a tear jerker are just FANS. And because they see the series first before Anohana. But for me I saw it almost the same season and Anohana is the better Anime even if it's just 11 episodes. Also the first time I heard the ending I was HOOKED immediately because it was emotional. In Clannad what the HECK is a ******* DANGO?

I was hit pretty hard by both of them but I choose Clannad over AnoHana. AnoHana would probably not have fazed me if I hadn't lost a close friend of mine a week before I watched it.
Clannad from start to finish taught me many lessons and the connection and development of the characters carries one of the heaviest impacts that an anime can hold. Clannad isn't my favorite VisualArts/Key Animation work though, Little Busters! takes that place by the side of Angel Beats!. Little Busters! is beginning the ~Refrain~ arc in the next season.

I honestly don't get all the hype on clannad. I couldn't even finish it because I found it boring...

I've watched both, and I'm willing to weigh my opinion on this issue.

Anohana's sadness came from misery, internal pain, and the detachment of friends once held dear. To me, the show isn't so much sad as much as it is emotionally enriching because it doesn't dwell in sorrow or despair. It's more about appreciating what friends you do have and moving on together with them. Don't get me wrong. The ending made me cry one tear, but it's more of a happy tear; however, I still felt like I was watching the, albiet honest, drama from afar most of the time. Nothing was really there to put me into their world, and that's my greatest complaint with this show.

Clannad's sadness comes from constant loss of one's most precious things. To me, this is the sadder show because it DOES keep you in sorrow and despair. Anohana had only one death and we didn't get to see it happen, whereas Clannad has several and it makes us watch and suffer with the characters as it happens each time (except in one case). It's not about lost lives either, but because we saw these dynamic and round characters that we all loved so much die, we can better appreciate how horribly wrecked the aftermath is for their loved ones as well.

Overall, I give the win to Clannad for sadder show. Its style of drama was more realistic and interactive. Because of that, I felt closer to the characters and was able to put myself into their world. That's the thing: Clannad made the effort to build AND connect its drama ever so slightly to the viewer.

Anohana lost this one because it expects a pity party from the audience right away, and true tear jerkers don't work like that. Granted, the tear jerkers between the characters are genuine; but I think we, the viewer, were being left out from these moments by not keeping our emotions in the show.
