You: Little busters, had me in an emotional wreck by the end.

Friend: Durarara, just plain great.

I have thought about which animes would be good for someone who has never seen them and would be turned off by some of the more niche ones, before. So here's what I have come up with so far. Usually more mainstream stuff is better.

Your Friend: Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Black Lagoon, Attack on Titan, Eden of the East, Spice and Wolf.

if he is not opposed to length then definitely recommend him the bigger shounen animes.

You: Wolf Children, Tokyo Godfathers, Rumbling Hearts, Kanon, Air

Sorry I didn't have more for you since you called out the two biggest ones, which I assume you have seen already. If not watch them.

I couldn't help but notice this little statement of yours: "Usually more mainstream stuff is better." You're probably saying this in a Gateway Series sense, but it raises a red flag to me. This mentality is flawed in my opinion because that's exactly how great shows become obscure.

Which begs my questions, "Do you feel uncomfortable about a show that isn't well known? If yes, Is it because you believe that the obscure can't meet or beat the standards the popular shows have set up?" Please don't think that way. It's a very closed-minded approach to new experiences in general. I, as a fan, want my other fellow fans to enjoy all the shows that I know of and they might like, regardless of popularity and/or notability.

Bottom line, hunting for and sharing the obscure is worth it, and keep an open mind about what you find. You'll never know if that show that will captivate you like FMA did or even amaze you like Bleach and One Piece might have, but you'll appreciate the fact that these obscurites exist and wonder why they fell off everybody's radar. Sometimes, you'll even come across a true gem that the popular shows can't even hold a candle to!

Sorry for the long rant, but I had to show my concern. Your advice felt poorly constructed to me, and I wanted to let you know that and explain to you why I thought that way.

Just got done watching it and right after little busters too. I don't think I can handle any more soul-crushers for now. Gotta find something funny and happy.

For your Friend: I highly recommend, Darker than Black, Full metal Alchemist or Blue Exorcist/
For you I recommend: Idk, Angel beats is the saddest thing I've watched, I'm more of a Sci-fi and fantasy guy.

For your friend
Break Blade
Black Lagoon
Seirei no Moribito
Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin

You.
Ef: a tale of Memories is what you want.

my favorite anime, and definitely something that a non-anime watcher could enjoy.

For your friend, I'll have to suggest english dubbed shows because well... it's kinda difficult for a starter to immerse him/her self into a new medium by staring at the bottom of the screen. Don't worry, I can suggest plenty for him/her by genre, and bolded ones are oftenly obscure, true treasures that both of you should see regardless:

Action: Scrapped Princess, the Slayers franchise, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (not kidding, pic related), Kekkaishi, Magic Knight Rayearth (the RPG-like setting is a huge plus), Scryed, Yu Yu Hakusho, Zoids (both Chaotic Century and New Century Zero), Trigun, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

Slice of Life/Comedy: Kamichu, Ika Musume (Squid Girl), Chobits, Hamtaro, K-on!, and Ouran High School Host Club (it has qualities of romance, but it plays more like this genre).

Drama: Key Visual Arts' big four of course: Air (one word: "Goal"), Kanon 2006, Clannad (I know you might have suggested it to him/her already), and Angel Beats (same deal).

For you: Uta Kata (especially in the second half, and do not let its opening fool you), and It's Not My Fault That I'm Not Popular!

For the friend: Trigun or Psycho-pass, for you, I'm afraid I'm a little low on sad shows. The best I've got is School Days.

Shiki.
Not similar to Clannad and Angel Beats! but sad none-the-less.
It also has great meaning to it, I generally suggest it.

Those three are my all time favorites by the way, Angel beats! Clannad and Shiki.

I have incredible desire to suggest Boku no Pico for both of you, but it's so damn obvious and overused even I don't find it funny atm...

So trying to be serious, show him Nichijou, it's stupid as hell and damn funny. All I see in comments are serious, deep and stuff like that anime, but nothing lighter. You'd think there's no comedy without sexuality. Although "weird" part might be a problem. But if he can't deal with a little weirdness, he can't deal with anime at all.

For you, I have no suggestions. Anime simply doesn't make me sad anymore.

Death Note, it's solid and fairly short, just ignore the second season.

Ano Hana for a sad story
You could always try Kaiba or Kino's Journey if you think life is just too perfect and you need to be depressed like right now.
#11 - santsbro (01/25/2014) [-]
Toradora for both, man.
User avatar #2 - tormain (01/25/2014) [+] (2 replies)
imo the best intro anime that isn't really long, right now, is Attack on Titan.

Heart wrenching anime kinda like angel beats! and Clannad is probably Toradora or AnoHana.
