Anime is simply japanese for animation.

Someone from japan would refer to spiderman as an anime.

In general the definition has evolved to animation that specifically originate from Japan charactirized by colorfull art and vibrant characters to distinguish it from western cartoons. Just like comics and manga are differentiates, such is anime and western cartoons because they are very different in it's execution.

All types of entertainment has different styles based on where it's made. You don't call a sitcom from american and "American Sitcom" or one from England and "English Sitcom", do you?
